Conduct
your business from Aruba while your meeting takes place. Since 2004, Aruba operates
under the auspices of the TIEA (Tax Information Exchange Agreement). Under the TIEA,
the U.S.-Aruba Tax Information Exchange generally allows U.S. taxpayers to claim
a tax deduction for expenses associated with a convention held in certain beneficiary
countries with tax information exchange agreements with the United States. In addition
under the TIEA, as of September 13, 2004, Aruba is considered part of the "North
American area" for purposes of determining whether U.S. taxpayers may deduct expenses
incurred in attending conventions, business meetings and seminars in Aruba. Convention
expenses that are incurred by U.S. taxpayers for meetings in geographical areas
considered part of the North American area and that otherwise are deductible as
ordinary and necessary business expenses are allowed as deductions without regard
to the additional limitations applicable to deductions for expenses associated with
foreign conventions under the TIEA.
Also, shipping to and from Aruba can be sent using U.S. shipping companies. More
time must be allowed as Aruba is considered an International Destination. A letter
of declaration must be mailed to the U.S. Customs Office declaring the value, content(s),
weight and dimension of the package. The letter may be sent via standard mail, email
or fax. Be sure to state in the letter whether or not the contents are for resale.
